HYEONHO JEON

Georg Philipp Telemann

HYEONHO JEON

Singing is the fundament for music in all aspects.

He who grasps the composition must sing in his movements.

He who plays instruments must be capable of singing.

In this way, singing must be diligently taught to young people.

- Georg Philipp Telemann

One day, Professor Gerd said, “Ho, you sing very well on the instrument, that is your strength.” Modesty, gratitude and profundity have been qualities acquired through Lünenbürger’s teaching and which HyeonHo Jeon applies to his own playing by endeavoring to sing, express the emotions of the music and bring it to life.

He gives concerts worldwide as a member of various ensembles, including Ensemble La Prosperina, Ensemble Matís, The New Baroque Company and Tourterelles. The New Baroque Company is interested in combining traditional Korean music with baroque music, and through this blend of modern music for baroque ensemble and a Korean traditional ensemble, the musicians are able to offer audiences a unique experience. In the upcoming years, the ensemble are aiming to fuse baroque music with media art.

HyeonHo puts a lot of value on bringing unknown music to light. For this reason, he made a CD recording of the entire Op.2 of André Cheron with Ensemble Matís. He subsequently recorded another album, “Vanitas” with the same ensemble. Both CDs were published by the label Ars Produktion. Away from CD recordings, he has collaborated with artists such as Pablo Valleti, Rinaldo Alessandrini (with La Cetra Baroque Orchestra) and Jin Kim with Musica Glorifica.

HyeonHo Jeon has been awarded many prizes both as a solo and ensemble player. Ensemble La Prosperina were awarded not only first prize, but also the audience prize at the Förderpreis Alte Musik Saarland. In 2013, with Ensemble Matís he won 2nd Prize at the Telemann international competition in Magdeburg. As a soloist, he was awarded 3rd prize at the internationally renowned Musica Antigua Bruges competition.

Born in Seoul, HyeonHo Jeon first studied at the University of Arts Berlin with Prof. Gerd Lünenbürger, then at the Escola Súperior de Música de Catalunya with Prof. Dr. Pedro Memelsdorff. At the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis he studied with Conrad Steinmann, and he is currently studying medieval music with Corina Martí.

HyeonHo Jeon previously taught at the Rheinfelden Music School and also acts as a substitute recorder teacher at the Musik-Akademie Basel. He was invited to the very first Baroque Festival in Hong Kong, where he gave concerts and workshops.

HYEONHO JEON

- Georg Philipp Telemann
